Looking for Opportunity in Economic Trends and Regulatory Changes

Opportunity 1: Drones

Describe:

New drone or UAV technology is leading the news in much of the aviation community. As a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, I receive daily newsletters about policy and trends in the aviation community, which has led me to the belief that multiple opportunities exist related to drone technology. Below is a link to an article that talks about the popularity of drones across the United States for both commercial and hobby uses. I believe an opportunity exists because drones are in the beginning stages of development and use. Drones are mainly used by the government to conduct aerial observation and unmanned strikes for the military. Now the private market is developing drones to be used to transport packages, survey land, recreation, and the list continues. From the article, the use or popularity of drones is also increasing which suggests a growing demand. In the private sector the recreational use of drones should have a target customer of anyone from tech fans, go-pro users, to children. For package delivery large industrial companies could very easily take advantage of the relatively new technology of drones. To exploit the opportunity it could be as simple as investing into stock into a newly created drone company. It would take considerable capital to create a drone fleet and meet FAA regulations, but the market is so new that entry would be relatively easy and innovation could set you apart from other competitors. I could see the development of drone delivery companies, drone flight training schools, drone mechanics, software developers, etc.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/this-is-the-no-1-city-where-americas-drones-are-flying-2016-05-18

Why:

I might clearly see this opportunity because I am an Aerospace Engineering student and ultimately want to own my own business in the aviation field. I am continually given information on the topic and I like to follow what is happening in my future field of work. While manned flight is my primary interest, it appears that the market for unmanned flight is becoming a greater demand and the cost to enter the market is far lower than the design of full sized aircraft.

Opportunity 2: 3D Printing

Describe:

I believe an opportunity exists to service the 3D printing community and help bring in more potential customers. I first thought this opportunity might exist when I was able to 3D prototypes through my coursework and then I read an article, link below, that talks about how large companies like Microsoft are starting to enter the 3D printing trend. If large companies are starting to market and develop technology in 3D printing then they obviously see a sign or trend from their consumers that suggests 3D printing is a sound investment. I see 3D printers mainly at Universities or in shops, but not in your every day average computer user. I see the opportunity for 3D printers to be used like the paper printers seen in almost every household, with little to no training, and at a good price point. It would be very difficult for a small entrepreneur with small amounts of capital to make this a reality, but a company as large as Microsoft could push this movement. With more 3D printers there would be even more opportunity to design and develop new printers, new materials to print, and an industry to service these products, which would be easier to take advantage of for smaller company.

https://3dprint.com/136241/microsoft-materialise-3d-builder/

Why:

I see this opportunity because of my continual exposure to the technology and larger companies are beginning to move towards the same technology. I also see a need for the technology in some of the business ventures I am and wish to be a part of. Rapid prototyping, using a 3D printer, is a great way to show a client exactly what they are getting as a solid, real object they can hold in their hands.

Opportunity 3: Paris Climate Change

Describe:

Recently in Paris the heads of state for many nations signed a new climate agreement to reduce emissions and other energy regulations, link below. The new regulations if enacted by President Obama will limit the fossil fuel production in the United States. The regulations on the oil and coal industries are predicted to all but shut down the respective industries. In turn, those power plants that use fossil fuels will also take a hit if they do  not meet the new regulations. The opportunity I believe exists is the ability to create companies that help the energy market meet the new regulations through the design of new equipment, processes, and monitoring of their emissions. Further, greater opportunity exists to develop and produce "clean" energy. Target customers for the advising to meet new regulations would be current energy companies. "Clean" energy customers would be citizens that want to use the new energy. The opportunity would be easy to enter if all you did was advise companies on how to implement and meet the regulations. The opportunity becomes harder when you actual develop or create methods for "clean" energy.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/12/12/almost-200-nations-adopt-climate-change-pact-this-is-huge/

Why:

I see this opportunity because as an future engineer I wanted to see what markets would yield the best pay and greatest demand for employment. The energy industry is being continually pushed in politics through the idea of "clean energy". Policy is driving companies to use battery power, wind turbines, etc. After looking at these trends for the past decade it was easy for me to see that if you limit production of fossil fuels then you force consumers to meet energy needs through another source.

Opportunity 4: FDA Regulations on E-Cigs

Describe:

With new regulations on the e-cigarette industry there may be multiple opportunities to help these companies meet the new regulations. The FDA is now requiring e-cig producers to register with the FDA, provide product ingredients, manufacturing processes, along with 499 pages of more regulations. Reading the New York Times article, link below, led me to the belief that an opportunity existed. The opportunity I see is that new lawyers well versed in the new regulations could make a killing off of helping companies meet and circumnavigate some of the new regulations. Further, developing safe practices to manufacture the e-cig liquid would need to be created, standardized, and implemented. The smaller e-cig producers would be the target customers to provide these services and products to. The opportunity would be difficult to enter because there are so many regulations it would take time and money to provide the solutions to the opportunity.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/06/science/fda-rules-electronic-cigarettes.html?_r=0

Why:

I think this opportunity exists because anytime the government implements new regulations, they generally take away the free market side to economics. When you no longer have a free market, it is no longer a game of freedom based solely on the products being offered, but it becomes a game of who can push the limits of the regulations and who can exploit the regulations to their benefit. In general regulations can be stifling to market growth, but those who adapt can profit. I have seen this with many other industries through the news and personal stories of associates.

Identifying Local Opportunities

Opportunity 1

Article Title: PINELLAS TRAFFIC STOP FALLOUT

Link: http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CECF775A191378?p=AWNB

Story Description: An off duty female sheriff''s deputy was driving radically and was pulled over by an officer. It appears that proper protocol was not taken to handle the situation. Instead of a DUI test the arresting officer decided to cite the impaired woman for reckless driving. The arresting officer is under investigation for his conduct.

Problem: Keeping our police force accountable for their actions and determining when their own discretion can and should be used and when the letter of the law should be applied.

Who: The population that the police protect and serve have this problem.

Opportunity 2

Article Title: CUSTOMERS AGAIN RATE DUKE NEAR THE BOTTOM

Link: http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CECF778A42B968?p=AWNB

Story Description: Duke Energy, local energy company in the Tampa Bay area, has continued its low rank of customer satisfaction. Duke has been consistently ranked has one of the worst energy companies in the state, by satisfaction. Generally satisfaction is based on price of energy and the disruptions in service. Duke has claimed it is trying to meet customer needs, but again this year their customers are dissatisfied.

Problem: Duke Energy has low customer satisfaction.

Who: This is bad for Duke Energy but essentially power companies have a local monopoly so that customers do not have another source of energy. This is also a problem for the customers of Duke Energy because they are continuing to receive poor service even after years of appeals to Duke energy to change their methods.

Opportunity 3

Article Title: LIVING IN A FLY ZONE

Link: http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CEDF4FE04EA140?p=AWNB

Story Description: Steve and Barbara Miller are two new resident of a fly-in community. Literally they live in a community where planes taxi down the streets and almost every house has its own hangar. The article goes on to describe the difficulties the Miller's faced to live there. They moved from New York City where Steve saw first hand the attacks of September 11. They eventually bought a house in a fly-in community and had to do many renovations.

Problem: The difficulty of entering into a fly-in community, and the cost of joining the aviation community.

Who: The Miller's specifically had this problem, but it applies to anyone interested in aviation.

Opportunity 4

Article Title: STATE FINALLY PUTS PRESSURE ON FRONTIER

Link: http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CEE21040A13970?p=AWNB

Story Description: In the Tampa Bay area Frontier took over the services once provided by Verizon for cable and internet. Since the regime change there have been outages of services for months now. Residents have not only complained to Frontier but they have also brought their complaints to the State Attorney General Pam Bondi and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. Frontier has promised to refund users for the outages and create U.S. based call centers. Another major shift of cable services is on the horizon and hopes to avoid the same problems.

Problem: Poor cable services provided by a change in cable providers.

Who: Residents of the Tampa Bay area are dealing with this.

Opportunity 5

Article Title: HURRICANE EXPO AT MOSI TODAY

Link: http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15CE8DD1B45CCCE8?p=AWNB

Bug List

What Bugs Exist and Why They Exist

1. Leaves always get tracked into my house through the front door.
This is due to the yard not being raked in who knows how long and the the trees not being trimmed on a regular basis.

2. My goggles always fog when I am swimming.
The heat from body and the cooler temperature of the moisture inside the goggles cause the fog to form with no ability to allow the fog to dissipate.

3. Hit by and close calls with cars while riding your bicycle.
A direct result of not having to understand the rules of the road for all vehicles when taking a driver's license test here in the state of Florida.

4. The volume when watching TV shows is low but suddenly becomes loud for commercials.
Commercials are meant to grab your attention, be clear, and make you want to buy a product, so a higher volume makes some of theses goals easier.

5. Electric bill is too high for the house during the summer.
The house I am staying in was built in the 60's so that the insulation and design of the house are out of date and not optimized to keep the house at a constant temperature

6. My headphones always break either at the ear pieces or the wire falls apart.
I always wrap my headphones around my listening device which cause the wire to stretch and break and the actual ear pieces get the most use so they tend to break apart sooner.

7. The bread always molds quickly, even when covered and put away.
We live in Florida, one of the most humid climates, which causes mold to form quicker in addition to the fact that the bread is made fresh so it also cause mold to form quicker.

8. When it starts to rain and people put their flashers on.
Generally, out of state tags are the culprits where it is normal to drive with your flashers on for varying reasons.

9. Rolling desk chairs always fall when you try and roll over carpet.
They are meant to roll on harder surfaces and the wheels are made of plastic which can easily tangle carpet.

10. Rain causes all of the dirt in the yard to wash onto the sidewalk.
There is no grass or trees left in the yard whose roots normally stop the washout and erosion.

11. During 5 o'clock traffic Archer Road is backed up for miles.
There is a massive amount of traffic that commutes in and out of Gainesville due to the University's presence and there is not enough space to accommodate all the traffic.

12. My shoes give me blisters when I run.
When training for a triathlon you run barefoot to have faster transitions. Most shoes are made to be used with socks which i do not use.

13. The bed sheets always come untucked after a few days.
The sheets do not have the elastic corners to apply pressure and i toss and turn regularly in my sleep so that they slip off the corners.

14. My ankles are always sore after swimming.
During swimming one of the main components of propulsion is the planter flexed foot. Repetitive resistance from the water cause the muscles in the ankle to stress.

15. I have to kill more bugs in the house during summer.
Rain generally increases during the spring and summer so that bugs look for dry places such as a house.

16. Doors at the new physic building are always hard to open and feel heavy.
The dampers at the top of the door have to high of a pressure and make the doors feel heavier than they should.

17. When a bartender serves you whiskey in a plastic cup instead of a glass.
It is a college town and generally college students are notoriously bad tippers or do not care, so the bartenders follow suit.

18. When my diving fins give me blisters on my feet after a couple of days of diving.
The plastics on most fins are rough and abrasive on wet skin.

19. After swimming in saltwater for 20 minutes or more and my mouth tastes like pure salt.
Some water enters your mouth when you swim and the salt dissolves into the lining around your mouth.

20. When your fishing and the wind is blowing and wraps the line around itself multiple times.
The line is generally made of a braided material that is meant to wrap on itself which gives it strength. Unfortunately it also makes it annoying to have to unfoul the line.

Reflection
The list was very difficult for me to come up with. Generally, most of the things i came up with are not problems or bugs for me, they are just apart of what you do. You have to deal with these issues on a regular basis and you get use to them as being apart of the every day routine without wondering why they occur. Further, some of the Bugs I came up with seem small, but even small Bugs can be annoying and have a root cause and possible solutions.

My Entrepreneurship Story

The most obvious exposure to entrepreneurship, in my life, is the ability watch my father start his own company. My dad has 20+ years of experience in land surveying, but ultimately wanted to be his own boss and do something that he enjoyed. This year he took the big leap and went full on into creating and cultivating is own company in metal art and design. There are a lot of risks associated with starting your own company, especially during uncertain economic times. Being your own boss gives you complete freedom and responsibility for the success of the company. My father's business is in its infancy, but  just taking the risk of starting it, is a big deal.

Furthermore, I decided to take this course because I plan on starting my own business in the future. It seemed like the obvious choice to enter a course that speaks specifically about the tools and abilities needed to become an entrepreneur. Admittedly i thought the course would be more about starting a business but I have an open mind about what I can learn. Below is a picture of the Wright brothers. I am going into my 5th year as a dual degree Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer and have always enjoyed the story of these brothers. On one hand my interest in flight drew them to me, but on the other hand there story of starting as a bike shop and then becoming the first to fly embodies the spirit required to be an entrepreneur. From this course I hope to learn more about how entrepreneurs like them think and operate in order to have success in my own future endeavors.
